The incident of enshrining memorial tablets of Japanese war criminals at Nanjing Xuanzang Temple

July 21st A netizen posted that as early as early February, a row of longevity plaques in the Ksitigarbha Hall of Xuanzang Temple in Nanjing’s Jiuhuashan Park was found to be enshrining war criminals from the Japanese invasion of China, including Class B war criminal Tanaka Kunikichi, Class A war criminal Matsui Iwane, and Class C war criminal Noda Takeshi. Xuanzang Temple is located just 3.3 kilometers from the Memorial Hall for the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre, and this revelation immediately sparked outrage across the internet.

In the early hours of the 22nd, in response to the aforementioned situation, the Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau of Xuanwu District, Nanjing, issued a statement announcing its decision to carry out a rectification campaign at the temple and stating that it will thoroughly investigate any acts that harm ethnic sentiments. That afternoon, the Nanjing Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government announced that they had instructed the Xuanwu District Bureau of Ethnic and Religious Affairs to remove Chuanzhen (commonly known as Li Yijiang) from his post as the principal person in charge of Xuanzang Temple; ordered Xuanzang Temple to suspend all routine activities; and, together with relevant departments, immediately initiated a rectification campaign and imposed disciplinary measures on other responsible officials.

Subsequently, the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the Buddhist Association, and other relevant organizations also expressed their positions on this incident.

On the evening of the 24th, Nanjing released the findings of its investigation into the incident, stating that the act of offering sacrifices was carried out by Wu Aiping as an individual, and no evidence has been found to suggest she was acting under someone’s direction or in collusion with others. Wu Aiping has since been placed under criminal detention.

However, this incident not only provokes the conscience of 1.4 billion Chinese people but also wounds their national sentiments. How, then, can these measures possibly soothe the public’s anger? While we do not advocate stirring up new ethnic hatred, that does not mean we should forget history—or, even worse, brazenly venerate the war criminals who once brutally murdered countless Chinese compatriots as if they were “friends and relatives.”
