#Reverse Rounding Incident#

“Rounding down” is a common practice in everyday life, especially in the days of cash payments. To avoid the hassle of giving change, merchants would round down the total by a few cents or a few dollars to make the transaction easier for customers. It not only facilitates payments but also helps maintain harmony between customers and merchants.

However, in today’s world where electronic payments are already widespread, the practice of “reverse rounding down” has unexpectedly emerged, sparking heated debate among netizens.

Recently, a man in Dalian, Liaoning, was dining with friends at a seafood stall. Their total bill came to 930.9 yuan, but they were charged 931 yuan. When the man took the receipt to ask the server about it, the server replied that this was standard “rounding”—if the change exceeded five cents, they rounded up; otherwise, they rounded down. The server even seemed incredulous and snapped back, “If you’re short by just one cent, I’ll transfer it to you, okay?” It’s both infuriating and amusing.

After the man uploaded a video of his experience, it quickly went viral online. While many netizens expressed sympathy for his ordeal, quite a few also shared their own stories of being subjected to “reverse rounding.” Judging from these accounts, instances of “reverse rounding” appear to be far from uncommon. As recently as March this year, media reported that a restaurant in Xiamen was fined more than 4,000 yuan by the local market supervision authority for “rounding up” customers’ bills.

However, when faced with such incidents, most netizens adopt the attitude of “forget it—why waste time over a few cents?” and don’t bother to pursue the matter further. Even in the comment sections of related news reports, you can often see remarks like, “There’s no need to get hung up over a single cent.” Over time, this illegal practice of “rounding off and eliminating the cents” has even become a widely accepted “norm.”

At present, the Dalian market supervision authorities have stated that they have immediately initiated an investigation. The restaurant involved has apologized for the incident and stated that it is actively identifying all customers who were charged a rounded-up amount recently, and will promptly contact them to apologize and refund the overcharged amount.

#Unpaid Overtime#

On October 11, China Newsweek published a report stating that a Shenzhen-based company recently drew public attention by openly asking job applicants in its application form whether they would accept unpaid overtime. In addition, interview questions not only cover whether candidates are willing to work unpaid overtime in the evenings or on weekends, but also include sensitive issues such as accepting delayed commission payments, delayed wages, switching from two-day weekends to single-day weekends, handling work during break times, attending evening or weekend training sessions and meetings, and having no social security contributions during the probationary period.

A reporter contacted the company involved, which responded by saying that every company has the right to ask questions; these inquiries are merely intended to gather information. “There is no standard answer—this is just a survey—and it will not affect the outcome of the interview.” However, “during the admissions process, candidates will be selected based on a comprehensive evaluation of their interview performance.”

These “sensitive issues,” which are either illegal or unreasonable, immediately spark heated debate whenever they are reported. For a long time, employers and employees have been in an unequal position in the job market. As societal competitive pressures intensify, “overtime” has perhaps become the norm for working people. Yet it is now being brazenly used as an interview question—asking candidates whether they are willing to work unpaid overtime at night, on weekends, or accepting delayed wages.

Isn’t this already a blatant defiance of the law? At present, the Office of the Nanshan District Human Resources Bureau in Shenzhen has stated that it has dispatched investigators to the company and ordered corrective measures, prohibiting the continued use of such questions in job interviews.
